EXTRA, EXTRA, READ ALL ABOUT IT! : All About Newsletters

In 2010 I am becoming more organized and have always wanted to try out a newsletter. Today, I did just that and I am excited to show you what I have found and created!

I first was inspired by TimothyAdamDesigns and his newsletter. He always has so many great tips and links. His e-mail I get is just text and links, so I wanted a little more color and pizzaz to mine since I am artsy and funky anyways.

I went to the Etsy forums and looked up a thread started by etsian, thecyclingartist, about newsletters and mailing lists. I hate using the word mailing list because it sounds like spam and ads. This is not want I want to see or read all the time if I am being picky about which newsletters I am signing up for.

In this thread, I founds two great sites to create a newsletter. Mad Mimi was the first mentioned. While it looks very cool and there were good reviews about it, I wanted something free to start off with to make sure I would stick with a newsletter and learn how to reach my audience. Their site starts off at $8 a month for the same amount of contacts I could have at Mail Chimp, which is the site I am using.

I have found Mail Chimp to be pretty easy to use once I poked around for an hour or two and sent myself a test newsletter. I am able to link my twitter and allow readers to share the newsletter via Facebook and other social networking sites! Now I am ready to send out my first newsletter, which will be bi-monthly and focus on featured artists, Etsy news, tips, and deals!

If you are choosing to create a newsletter or mailing list, there are a few rules and laws you must follow and can be found at the FTC site for the CanSpam Act Laws. Please take a look at these and make sure your newsletters follow the few, but simple laws.

I will be updating this post as I learn more about newsletters and read comments and suggestions from you!

Please take a moment to sign up for my bi-monthly newsletter. Check out my first issue and see what you think? Let me know if it is good, bad, or what could be improved. What do you want to see?? You can always opt out later. Sign up below or to the left side of my blog!

Buried Treasury and TimothyAdamDesigns

For the past few months, I have had the pleasure of talking and working with etsian TimothyAdamDesigns. I met found him on Etsy back when he was looking for artists for his second edition of The Handbook to Handmade. I noticed in the forums that several were interested in being a part of this monthly publication. At the time, it seemed like a lot of money, but when I decided to go for it, the spaces to be in the book were gone.

Shortly after, I was able to jump on board and be in the third edition and get chosen for the cover (the Rainbow Crayons)! I loved the book so much that I joined again in the 5th edition as well!

Since then, Timothy now has a HUGE following and sells out of the preregistrations sometimes in 24 hours or less. Being featured in his book is in high demand right now and it is a great purchase for anyone looking to advertise!

He has even now come up with a $10.00 ad space you can purchase (which I have twice already), which I think is amazing because this book is sent all over the world. It is a great keepsake, promotional item, or advertising source for anyone's shop!

He has also gone on to develop several blogs that have become popular:
And his newest, Buried Treasury.

BURIED TREASURY
In the new Buried Treasury blog, Timothy features Etsy-Minis of all types of shops. Anyone can be features and tagged on up to five categories. All one has to do is comment on at least two of the postings/shops and send him a convo. For more information, CLICK HERE.

I did this yesterday and within a few minutes, Tim had me up and running!

Tim Says, ".....there are so many great items on Etsy that are buried under thousands of items......lets dig up these Etsy treasures and display them in a different and unique way. These Minis are active and can change when
 shop owners change their items"

I took some screen shots for you to see above and below!

Topic Talk #2: The Benefits and Importance of Blogging

In this blog, I feature other art and artists about 90% of the time with the occasional drop of something I am posting or working on. I think it is important for others to help promote eachother and spread the word. Making meaningful connections is key to becoming a great artist and a successful seller on etsy, ebay, or any types of sites where art is shared, sold, or discussed.

There are so many blogs to read. What makes one more popular than the next? How do I get more exposure to my blog? How do I become featured in a blog? These and other blog related questions I want to address below with a little help from some friends and previous feedback.

MY PERSONAL TIPS
-Post something new every day!!!!!!!!

-Use Blogpatrol.com (see below)

-Refer to items, artists, posts with LINKS when you can. It is a great way to be picked up by search engines and other artists trying to find you.

-Find a good balance of personal posts, your art/crafts/etsy, blogging about other artists or sellers, and a range of interesting photos.

-Link your blog when appropriate in forums, blog comments, or other sites.

-Make friends with other bloggers and post links to their blogs (I have a "My Favorite Etsy Bloggers" section to the left). They will often return the favor.

-Hold contests and give-aways from time to time to up your views, gain more readers, and even get others interested in what you have to sell.

-Include meaningful and useful content!

PLACES TO INCREASE TRAFFIC TO YOUR BLOG
A free blog widget, where posts are automatically promoted on related blogs across the internet.

Also, free and you can join specific blog rings such as ETSY, ACEO, etc. Blog readers can click on a small icon this site creates for you to automatically be taken to the next blog on that ring. It is random when people get to yours, but it works and increases traffic. I have a link at the upper, left side under my counter. TRY IT!

Share tips, ideas, and meet others who blog. This site also will create a widget for you to put on your blog so others can find you. I am a member of this team, but have not spent a lot of time with the site yet.

This site is a social blogging directory on the internet. It sorts blogs by various topics and serves as a promotional tool for others to find your blog. I have yet to sign up for this due to lack of time, but I have often been taken to this site when I goggle myself or my blog. I find that many have written about things I have posted in Etsy or they have written about my blog.

COUNTERS AND WAYS TO TRACK TRAFFIC TO YOUR BLOG
If anyone has a blog, THIS IS THE TOOL THAT IS A MUST HAVE!!!!!!

This site will track everything from daily visits, total visits, what site someone found your blog link on, the specific pages in your blog they read, how many times that blog post has been read, top 10 posts, etc.

There are even graphs of how many visitors have seen your blog, a pie graph of what countries visitors are from, what types of computers they are using, etc.

It also keeps track of google searches and yahoo searches that people have typed in to find you or your blog.

The nice thing is that this will also give you an accurate visit count without counting yourself when you visit and update, refresh, etc.

Most bloggers I have seen use this counter that is free and gives a variety of styles to choose from. The only bad thing is that it will count myself when I visit, update, and refresh. There might be a way to change this, but I have not found that yet. Still, it is still good to have on the blog.

TIMOTHY ADAM DESIGNS BLOG UPDATE
Timothy Adam has a great blog and has recently written a post about blogging as well that has similar sites, but is a great tool in general!

His big tip is to post something new EVERY DAY (something that I am bad at recently).

READERS WRITE BACK... WHY DO YOU BLOG?

"I just started blogging for fun - cicuska.typepad.com
I blog about things i make or find, anything i think someone might find interesting and/or useful, and i do "etsy sundays" where Ii pick a theme and 6 items from etsy that fall under that category. "   -Cicuska, Flickr

"I blog mostly to get ideas out of my head and stored elsewhere. and keep track of all of my "projects."   -Smashing, Etsy

"I blog and I put links to other blogs on my blog. I blogged mainly because I wanted to have a journal accounting my first year in business. Then I started getting hits to my site and that was fun. The more I blog the more visitors I get, the more visitors I get the more I blog. " -Dancing Monkey Jewelry, Flickr

"I mainly use mine as a way to keep things organized - i feel like i have things scattered all over the internet - flickr, etsy, etc. and it's nice to be able to link to just one or two places where people can find links to any of my other online spaces, instead of just randomly finding them over time. So mainly, i have it for organization. the content is sort of general, mainly just things i find online that i like, or things i am making. if someone recommends something to me, like a book or a movie, and i like it, i'll throw it up there too. but it's mainly craft-related. oh, and there are pictures of my cats."   -Chelsea Creature, Flickr

"I use my blog to show off. Simply put. I also use it as kind of a journal though too. I write about any and everything. I love getting the comments and views and I always hope that it leads to sales, though it often does not."  -armorgan, Etsy

"I try to blog regularly about my work. It's the only place that I post news, such as what I am currently working on, new items I have created and where to purchase them, where my work has been featured, etc. I also use it to try and promote artists that have featured my work in blogs or treasuries to try and repay them for their kindness =)"
 -Kaysk9s, Flickr

"I think one important thing is building relationships. I've become friends with some of the people that visit my blog often, and in turn I end up hearting their things and will go to these people if I ever need something that they sell!"
-Kieutiepie, Flickr

"I only use blog as my art gallery and write a few basic things about each piece:)."   -tanyabond, Etsy

"For me, blogging is important to give a human aspect to my store....people get to know you through your blogs."                       -artbyangie, Etsy

"Blogging is important because it forms a bridge between the artist and the potential buyer. We don't sell "things". We sell pieces of ourselves, and by talking about our pieces and the processes that go into making them, we are helping the buyer to see the art as we see it. As far as tips are concerned, I'd say having some great images in each post is the most important thing you can do to get someone to read. I've left plenty of blogs that were all text, because there was nothing to draw me in

When it comes to traffic, the
best thing you can do is get involved in other groups outside Etsy and spread your link there. Illustration Friday and Flickr have provided a great boost for us, but there are several crafting forums that could work as well. Having contests and give aways also will bring a temporary boost, but make sure you have lots of great content to keep people coming back. For search engine optimization (SEO) you need to add alt tags to all of your images. That will get them picked up in image searches. It will require editing the html of your post, but it's really easy. Just look for the alt=" " and place a description of the picture (with your shop name) between the quotes."   -GreenSpaceGoods, Etsy

I hope that this information has been useful and that you take to heart some of the tips that are provided.

Feel free to comment or add to anything that was mentioned or any new ideas you may have for Bloggers!

The 2008 edition of  "Create. Collect. Trade. A collection of Artist Trading Cards Created by Artists and Students" is now available for artists to purchase their 2 FULL PAGES and individual copy of.

"Create. Collect. Trade. A Collection of Artist Trading Cards Created by Artists and Students" is an 80 page yearly publication of ACEO (Art Cards, Editions, and Originals) and ATC (Artist Trading Cards) art created by 25 artists and 25 elementary art students, who use these artists as inspiration.

This book is perfect for shop and artist promotion, a great coffee table book, and an inspirational guide for visual artists, students, and teachers.

This handbook is sent out to each of the 25 artists for them to use it as a promotional tool and given to artists, teachers, and art students to refer to for inspiration and interest.
Being featured in this book is a way to share and give back to the art community, while at the same time promoting yourself, your art, and adding this experience to your portfolio.

I will be updating the blog on a daily basis and providing more information about the book. Please convo me on Etsy or send an e-mail to art2theextreme@yahoo.com

***Create. Collect. Trade. was inspired by Project ATC, where Flickr and Etsy ACEO and ATC artists have donated their cards to swap with elementary art students in the hopes to make this art form become more well known and provide students with the visual opportunity to view actual artist work.

****Thank you to TimothyAdamDesigns for help and guidance! Please take time to check out his ETSY shop. His work is AMAZING!

The Handbook to Handmade- My 1st Etsy Purchase...

Yes, I know. WHAT?? Nicole, you have been an Etsian for about 40 days now and have not purchased anything? How is that possible?

Well today was the day that I purchased my first item from Etsy. I had to save up enough money and have some to spare to make a few other purchases from my favorites (as seen at the very bottom of my blog page). I think I put about 20 new items on my favorites because I went through about 1/2 of the treasuries to look for things I wanted to buy. I also discovered that my Rainbow Crayons and the Mommy and Baby Roo were featured in three Treasuries! Yay.

Back to my purchase...

So, for the last month or so typing and reading in the forums, I have come across Etsian TimothyAdamDesigns several times. I kept seeing this post over and over about some handmade book... after looking at posting while he was advertising Volumes I and II, I discovered that this was not just some book...

I decided that I really wanted to do this. I sent about 5 million messages to him asking 5 million more questions. He was so kind and helpful in getting me the right answers VERY quickly. I also discovered his blog about the book titled, The Handbook to Handmade Vol. III, where he also advertises links to Etsy shops who have purchased the book.

This book is such a great promotional tool and makes a great coffee table book as well. Now granted, I have yet to see my own physical copy of it, I can tell from his customer service, detailed listing and photos, and previous buyer feedback, that you can not go wrong from a promotional keepsake such as this. He even offers discounted copies of previous Volume extras if you cannot get enough Etsy love from Vol. III.

Now my photos I am choosing may not be the best of listings since I am newer and have not listed my really cool items yet, but I am so excited to get my copy in the mail and plan for being in future editions ahead.

Here are the images I am going to use (one is an alternate)...

Let me know what you think. I need to go work on my blurp for the book now... if you buy a copy, I will autograph my two pages for you as well ;) (Just Kidding).
