Topic Talk #5: Pimp My Blog Continued....

DISCLAIMER: Ok, so before I share today's tips, I will first mention that in know way is "pimp" in my normal, everyday vocabulary. I am an elementary school teacher for heavens sake. I thought it would be a funny title (a play off of "Pimp My Ride" on MTV... if that show has even survived this long...). This comment referred back to one person who previously made a comment about how they will not use my advice since I put "Pimp" in the title.... come on... seriously?! :)

Alright, now back to those of us who would like helpful tips today :).

So, I must share with you some an awesome blogging site that allows you to have a fun background like you currently see on my blog as you are reading this. There are no sign-ups, no password, no catches.

I was in the Etsy Forums posting my blog links and updates when I clicked on the blog of Etsian poshpretties, (who by the way, has a really fun shop as well). As I was looking at their latest post, I noticed that they had such a nice background (and yet, was still using blogger/blogspot). I saw a small box in the upper, left hand corner, which led me to one of the best sites I have recently found for bloggers.

Now just because the site has a cute name, do not think that it is automatically for females and those who like cutesy things. There are some great links, tips, and best of all, GREAT BACKGROUNDS! They even have banners that match your background!

For those 2-column bloggers, there are a TON of options. I started looking and trying them out, but then noticed.... OH NO! This does not fit the 3-column layout that I have secretly encoded into my HTML (which BTW, I know very little about HTML, which means YOU can do this too! CLICK HERE FOR THE 3-COLUMN LAYOUT).

I then looked at the right hand side. At the very top, it had a button for 3-column layouts. We are now in business...

All you have to do is choose which one you want, copy/paste the HTML, then click "add a new gadget-HTML" on your blogger layout page. I assume this works for other blogs as well. In under 5 minutes, I was able to harmlessly try about 5 different backgrounds until I found one that fit in with my blog style and look. No mistakes, no accidentally deleting something important from your HTML code- ZIP problems.

So cool.... please try it yourself and see how easy it is!

For those of you just joining in on my blog, I have several blog links that are very useful to both new and experienced bloggers on the left-hand side of my blog. Also check out my previous "Topic Talks" here!

***Like what you see? Check out the new Blogger gadget, "Followers," which lets others become a follower of your blog and catch up on your latest postings. Become a follower of Art2theextreme on the left side of my blog!

Topic Talk #4: PIMP MY BLOG... Extreme Style...

The more and more I research blogs and look at other blogs, the more and more I find.
In an older post called "Useful Links to Help Bloggers," I had talked about a wonderful site called Blog Buster. This is the site that provided step-by-step instructions on how to change your layout to the 3 column format (which I adore).

Today, I discovered some new things on this site that are fun to add, ways to save space, and make your blog more attractive (or more to your personal style rather than the same old, same old blog template).

COLORED BACKGROUND WITH ROUNDED CORNERS
For the frequent visitors, you can see I have changed my blog to put a colored background with rounded corners for my middle section (You can chose any colors and even put colors in the background of the side bars. I have yet to decide if I like the light blue (do you?), but I thought it was fun. I just hope it does not make my blog look cheesy.

Want a colored background with rounded colors?  VISIT HERE

LABEL DROP DOWN MENU
I had not had a labels widget on my blog since I have way to many labels (tags for posts). I did want to try the labels drop down menu and give it a whirl. Check on the right side of my blog to see what it looks like (under my "Blog Archive" section). This saves a ton of space for those who do include labels and is an easy way to search subjects on a blog.

Want your own drop down menu for your labels? VISIT HERE

MYBLOGLOG COMMENT AVATARS TO YOUR COMMENT SECTION
I signed up for MyBlogLog today. I am not too sure what this really does, but I will be in touch again about this. Many bloggers are signed up for it though. Anyways, if you have one (or even if you dont) this special feature will put BlogLog avatars with comments when a visitor to your blog comments on a post. Mine all have question marks for now, but I am going to see if this works.

Want avatars for those who comment to show up in your comments page? VISIT HERE

GET RID OF "NOFOLLOWS"
The three top search engines, Google, Yahoo, and MSN prevent you from becoming indexed in their searches most of the time because of this tag embedded in your blog "rel='nofollow'." This is used in HTML coding to reduce spam when indexing these sites. The bad part for you is that you are a "legit" site, but these codes automatically prevent you from being indexed into these sites. Yes, when we "Google" ourselves, they come up, but you could have EVEN MORE!
I could only find two of the three places where this code is embedded. Maybe you will have better luck, but 2 out of 3 still help.

Want the NOFOLLOW taken off of your HTML? VISIT HERE

NAVIGATION BLOG BUTTONS
I found a way to put text buttons on the blog. They are supposed to be light blue with white lettering, but I have not perfected it yet. It can be seen at the top of my blog on the upper right hand side. This is experimental for me...

Want your own link buttons for easy navigation? VISIT HERE

SNAPSHOT
I have not decided if this is useful or annoying (Please kindly give me your opinion). Snapshop lets you view the webpage of an active link in a small "snapshot". It makes your site more interactive and does not affect the blog loading time. Please try it out on my site and let me know what you think.

Want your own Snap Shop widget on your blog? VISIT HERE

Well... I have been on the computer for way too long... Try these out and let me know what you think! I hope it helps you "Pimp out your blog" as some might say. Check back for more tips soon!

TOPIC TALK #3: It is Spring and That Means.... CRAFT FAIR TIME!

Today I signed up for my first official craft/art fair! It is being held in Bloomington, IN (home of IU) and I am super excited! I have never really sold at a real craft fair, so hopefully I do well. I am basically taking this as a learning experience since I do not have an official sign, fancy set up, or credit card machine.

I started a thread about two days ago about craft fairs to see what other's tips and opinions are about them and tips for a newbie.

Fluffy Flowers' blog had some great tips for farmer's markets and fairs that I have been looking at as well! It is a whole series of blogs about set up, other vendors, promotion, pricing, etc. I found this very helpful, as well as the thread I started. Thanks for everyone who gave me input!

Tips to Remember:
-Put a blank book out for customers to sign up for an e-mail list.
-Have a drawing (place it near the book for them to sign up for the e-mail list and raffle at the same time).
-Put tables in a U shape if you have more than one.
-Use layers and levels when displaying items in your booth.
-Have business cards!
-Get a tall chair and do not sit behind the table the whole time.
-Make eye-contact and be friendly. If you are fake, it is noticeable!
-When people ask you how your day has been, answer positively, "Great, I am having fun." Customers do not want to hear you complain or that you  have not sold anything.
-Have many items with different price ranges. Make sure some things are low in price for those who feel they just  have to buy something!

Etsian CoryellDesign also put a nice list of things not to forget to bring (about midway though the page).

Have you ever participated in a craft/art fair? Do you have any tips for me or other readers? Please comment here! I would love to hear what you have to say.

Also, I have a survey at the top about things I should bring to sell at the fair this weekend. Please vote. I would like to see what is popular from my shop in your opinion!

OMG!Lia? also has a blog update about what to bring to a craft fair. CHECK IT OUT HERE!

Topic Talk #2: The Benefits and Importance of Blogging

In this blog, I feature other art and artists about 90% of the time with the occasional drop of something I am posting or working on. I think it is important for others to help promote eachother and spread the word. Making meaningful connections is key to becoming a great artist and a successful seller on etsy, ebay, or any types of sites where art is shared, sold, or discussed.

There are so many blogs to read. What makes one more popular than the next? How do I get more exposure to my blog? How do I become featured in a blog? These and other blog related questions I want to address below with a little help from some friends and previous feedback.

MY PERSONAL TIPS
-Post something new every day!!!!!!!!

-Use Blogpatrol.com (see below)

-Refer to items, artists, posts with LINKS when you can. It is a great way to be picked up by search engines and other artists trying to find you.

-Find a good balance of personal posts, your art/crafts/etsy, blogging about other artists or sellers, and a range of interesting photos.

-Link your blog when appropriate in forums, blog comments, or other sites.

-Make friends with other bloggers and post links to their blogs (I have a "My Favorite Etsy Bloggers" section to the left). They will often return the favor.

-Hold contests and give-aways from time to time to up your views, gain more readers, and even get others interested in what you have to sell.

-Include meaningful and useful content!

PLACES TO INCREASE TRAFFIC TO YOUR BLOG
A free blog widget, where posts are automatically promoted on related blogs across the internet.

Also, free and you can join specific blog rings such as ETSY, ACEO, etc. Blog readers can click on a small icon this site creates for you to automatically be taken to the next blog on that ring. It is random when people get to yours, but it works and increases traffic. I have a link at the upper, left side under my counter. TRY IT!

Share tips, ideas, and meet others who blog. This site also will create a widget for you to put on your blog so others can find you. I am a member of this team, but have not spent a lot of time with the site yet.

This site is a social blogging directory on the internet. It sorts blogs by various topics and serves as a promotional tool for others to find your blog. I have yet to sign up for this due to lack of time, but I have often been taken to this site when I goggle myself or my blog. I find that many have written about things I have posted in Etsy or they have written about my blog.

COUNTERS AND WAYS TO TRACK TRAFFIC TO YOUR BLOG
If anyone has a blog, THIS IS THE TOOL THAT IS A MUST HAVE!!!!!!

This site will track everything from daily visits, total visits, what site someone found your blog link on, the specific pages in your blog they read, how many times that blog post has been read, top 10 posts, etc.

There are even graphs of how many visitors have seen your blog, a pie graph of what countries visitors are from, what types of computers they are using, etc.

It also keeps track of google searches and yahoo searches that people have typed in to find you or your blog.

The nice thing is that this will also give you an accurate visit count without counting yourself when you visit and update, refresh, etc.

Most bloggers I have seen use this counter that is free and gives a variety of styles to choose from. The only bad thing is that it will count myself when I visit, update, and refresh. There might be a way to change this, but I have not found that yet. Still, it is still good to have on the blog.

TIMOTHY ADAM DESIGNS BLOG UPDATE
Timothy Adam has a great blog and has recently written a post about blogging as well that has similar sites, but is a great tool in general!

His big tip is to post something new EVERY DAY (something that I am bad at recently).

READERS WRITE BACK... WHY DO YOU BLOG?

"I just started blogging for fun - cicuska.typepad.com
I blog about things i make or find, anything i think someone might find interesting and/or useful, and i do "etsy sundays" where Ii pick a theme and 6 items from etsy that fall under that category. "   -Cicuska, Flickr

"I blog mostly to get ideas out of my head and stored elsewhere. and keep track of all of my "projects."   -Smashing, Etsy

"I blog and I put links to other blogs on my blog. I blogged mainly because I wanted to have a journal accounting my first year in business. Then I started getting hits to my site and that was fun. The more I blog the more visitors I get, the more visitors I get the more I blog. " -Dancing Monkey Jewelry, Flickr

"I mainly use mine as a way to keep things organized - i feel like i have things scattered all over the internet - flickr, etsy, etc. and it's nice to be able to link to just one or two places where people can find links to any of my other online spaces, instead of just randomly finding them over time. So mainly, i have it for organization. the content is sort of general, mainly just things i find online that i like, or things i am making. if someone recommends something to me, like a book or a movie, and i like it, i'll throw it up there too. but it's mainly craft-related. oh, and there are pictures of my cats."   -Chelsea Creature, Flickr

"I use my blog to show off. Simply put. I also use it as kind of a journal though too. I write about any and everything. I love getting the comments and views and I always hope that it leads to sales, though it often does not."  -armorgan, Etsy

"I try to blog regularly about my work. It's the only place that I post news, such as what I am currently working on, new items I have created and where to purchase them, where my work has been featured, etc. I also use it to try and promote artists that have featured my work in blogs or treasuries to try and repay them for their kindness =)"
 -Kaysk9s, Flickr

"I think one important thing is building relationships. I've become friends with some of the people that visit my blog often, and in turn I end up hearting their things and will go to these people if I ever need something that they sell!"
-Kieutiepie, Flickr

"I only use blog as my art gallery and write a few basic things about each piece:)."   -tanyabond, Etsy

"For me, blogging is important to give a human aspect to my store....people get to know you through your blogs."                       -artbyangie, Etsy

"Blogging is important because it forms a bridge between the artist and the potential buyer. We don't sell "things". We sell pieces of ourselves, and by talking about our pieces and the processes that go into making them, we are helping the buyer to see the art as we see it. As far as tips are concerned, I'd say having some great images in each post is the most important thing you can do to get someone to read. I've left plenty of blogs that were all text, because there was nothing to draw me in

When it comes to traffic, the
best thing you can do is get involved in other groups outside Etsy and spread your link there. Illustration Friday and Flickr have provided a great boost for us, but there are several crafting forums that could work as well. Having contests and give aways also will bring a temporary boost, but make sure you have lots of great content to keep people coming back. For search engine optimization (SEO) you need to add alt tags to all of your images. That will get them picked up in image searches. It will require editing the html of your post, but it's really easy. Just look for the alt=" " and place a description of the picture (with your shop name) between the quotes."   -GreenSpaceGoods, Etsy

I hope that this information has been useful and that you take to heart some of the tips that are provided.

Feel free to comment or add to anything that was mentioned or any new ideas you may have for Bloggers!
